The city grew from a Khmer trading post called Prey Nokor into the commercial engine of modern Vietnam. French colonial rule remodeled the urban grid with wide boulevards in the late 19th century.As Saigon, it served as the capital of South Vietnam until 1975, when the conflict ended and the city was officially renamed after Ho Chi Minh.
