Bavaria's historic island hub on Lake Constance.
introduction
Lindau sits on a island in Lake Constance, connected to the Bavarian mainland by a rail causeway and a road bridge. The historic centre packs gabled merchant houses, medieval towers, and cobblestone alleys into less than one square kilometre. You navigate the island entirely on foot, while local buses and ferries link you to mainland neighbourhoods and neighbouring Austrian and Swiss ports. Plan around summer crowd peaks or visit in late spring when ferry schedules expand.
Arrival trick
Trains split between mainland Reutin station and the island station. Express trains often stop only at Reutin, where local buses connect to the island in ten minutes.
Bavaria's lake port
Lindau holds Bavaria's only harbour on Lake Constance. The 1856 Bavarian Lion and lighthouse mark the water entrance.
Island parking restriction
Cars face strict limits on the island. Park at the mainland P1 or P2 lots and walk across the Seebrücke bridge.

Lindau's menus reflect its position where Swabian and Bavarian culinary traditions meet Lake Constance fish stock. Commercial Felchen fishing in Lake Constance is currently prohibited under a 2024–2026 moratorium to allow stocks to recover, but local fishers harvest Kretzer (perch) daily. Kitchens pan-fry or poach these fish with simple butter and lemon sauces.Landward dishes skew heavy and comforting. You find Kässpätzle topped with fried onions and local mountain cheese alongside Swabian Maultaschen. Pair your meal with dry white wine made from Müller-Thurgau grapes grown on the lake slopes.

Island taverns stop kitchen service around 21:00. Reserve tables ahead for traditional spots along Fischergasse.
While larger hotel restaurants take cards, smaller wine taverns on the island often require cash.
history
Lindau originated as a female canonry establishment in the 9th century. Its island position provided natural protection from land invaders, allowing it to grow into an influential trading town during the Middle Ages.Emperor Rudolph I granted Lindau the status of an Imperial Free City in 1275. The city controlled profitable trade routes across Lake Constance into the Alps until it lost its independence to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1806.
First Written Record
A document by a Saint Gall monk mentions the convent on the island of Lindau.
Imperial Free City
Lindau secures self-governing status directly under the Holy Roman Emperor.
Bavarian Integration
Napoleon dissolves the empire's free cities, annexing Lindau to Bavaria.
Harbour Modernisation
Workers construct the stone lighthouse and Bavarian Lion pier entrance.
where to stay
Choose your base based on transport priorities and atmosphere. Staying on the island puts you directly inside the historic pedestrian zone, but requires dragging luggage from transit points or paying premium hotel rates. Mainland bases offer easier car access, lower room rates, and quick connections via city buses or train loops.
