A short history
Conquistador Jorge Robledo founded the settlement in 1541. It served as the capital of the Antioquia province for nearly three centuries, prospering on gold extraction from nearby river beds.When gold yields declined and trade routes shifted toward the Aburrá Valley, the provincial capital moved to Medellín in 1826. This transfer halted major development, unintentionally preserving Santa Fe's 18th-century streetscapes and architecture.
