Tagaytay served as a forested ridge refuge during the Philippine Revolution, where revolutionaries hid in the dense fog and valleys. It officially became a chartered city in 1938 under President Manuel L. Quezon to establish a high-altitude retreat close to the capital.

Getting around
Tagaytay stretches 20 kilometers along a single main artery, the Tagaytay-Nasugbu Highway and Tagaytay-Calamba Road. Jeepneys travel up and down this road continuously. Tricycles serve the side roads leading down the hillsides, but regulations ban them from operating on the main highway itself.
