Sri Lanka

Trincomalee

Deep-water history and clear seas on the east coast.

introduction

Overview

Trincomalee sits on one of the world's finest natural harbors on Sri Lanka's northeastern coast. The town splits into a historic Tamil-majority urban center and a northern coast lined with calm beaches. You move through it by tuk-tuk, switching between colonial fort walls, clifftop Hindu shrines, and quiet sands. Unlike the southwest coast, Trincomalee gets its dry weather while the rest of the island rains.

Arrival trick

Night trains from Colombo Fort sell out weeks ahead. Secure a sleeper berth early or take an express daytime bus from Pettah.

Natural harbor

Trincomalee commands a vast natural harbor. British, French, and Dutch navies fought for control of its deep waters over three centuries.

Planning trick

The east coast weather flips the national trend. Visit between March and August for calm seas and clear diving conditions.

history

A short history

Trincomalee's deep natural harbor made it a target for European powers seeking control of Indian Ocean trade routes. The Portuguese destroyed the original thousand-pillar Koneswaram Temple in 1624 to construct Fort Frederick. Dutch forces captured the site in 1639, completely rebuilding the fortress structure seen today.During World War II, the British Royal Navy designated Trincomalee as its Far Eastern Fleet headquarters. The port suffered a major air attack by the Japanese Imperial Navy in April 1942. Late 20th-century conflict isolated the region for decades, preserving its undeveloped coastline compared to Sri Lanka's south coast.

  3. 1942

  4. 2009

    Civil War Ends

Military operations cease in the region, reopening the eastern coastline to domestic travel and international tourism.
