A short history
Whitby grew around Streaneshalch monastery, founded in 657 AD by Saint Hilda. It evolved from a medieval fishing village into an 18th-century shipbuilding and whaling port. Local shipyards crafted James Cook's survey vessels Endeavour and Resolution. Later, Victorian seaside tourism arrived alongside local extraction of Whitby jet stone.
