The location is central in a historic building. The staff are attentive and friendly, though the facilities aren’t exactly top‑class; the traditional setup is still worth seeing.

Hotel Gasthof zur Post, a 1330-built coaching inn, stands in St. Gilgen's heart, near Lake Wolfgang's shore. Its medieval foundation and façade, massive stone walls, and traditional basements and vaults exude charm. The hotel combines classic elements with innovative design, offering regional specialties, seasonal delicacies, and freshly caught Lake Wolfgang fish, in a setting that has hosted famous personalities, including Mozart's sister's wedding in 1784.

The breakfast was flawless, offering fresh fruit, savory and sweet items, a variety of breads, impeccable service and a buffet that was refilled regularly; the sauna and pool were clean and accessible, the room was tidy and the staff were courteous. However, the Wi‑Fi in the room was practically nonexistent and very poor (on the third floor); I was told I could use the sofa on the second floor, but the lamp there is motion‑sensor‑controlled, which is annoying when spreading maps for a hike. I often had to stay in nightclothes while planning the next day, making trips to the second‑floor lobby inconvenient, and I couldn’t complete some computer work I had planned. There is no parking except for about ten spaces, and the public lot nearby is free. There were hardly any coat racks for drying wet gear, which feels unsuitable for hikers at a hotel of this standing. I give it a 7 because, despite all the positives, the hotel seems to favor a certain clientele. On the last night I booked a dinner table with a young lady who said it would be on the terrace; I arrived at 19:00 and the older lady seated me inside in dim light with only three tables occupied. After I mentioned my reservation, she and a colleague moved me back to the terrace. I soon realized they wanted to free a table for a party of six, so they asked a family already seated to move inside. If I hadn’t been at my table, they could have rearranged the six‑person group there. I find this behaviour unacceptable—prioritising outsiders over guests who had stayed 13 nights. I do not condone this at all.

Wonderful! The pool water could have been a bit warmer.

The building is beautiful with great location; the rooftop pool offers an amazing view. The breakfast is good, but the selection isn’t large and lacks variety, becoming repetitive after a few days. The TV is small and streaming isn’t available. The parking is very narrow with few spots; whether a car fits depends on luck.
