The décor felt fresh, the location was great, but one bathroom couldn’t adjust the water temperature.

I booked a queen‑bed room at the Aurum Motel for 5 nights in May 2026, a hipster‑youth‑hostel‑style spot inside a 2‑storey renovated heritage shophouse that offers tents or private rooms, shared toilets, heated showers and wash basins on the ground floor. On the day I arrived, I got a WhatsApp text an hour before with all the self‑check‑in details, including the door PIN and lock instructions—very hassle‑free. Ah Xiang was there at the arrival time I’d set, which felt like a nice personal touch. He gave me a tour of the place and my room. The stay was comfortable, and there weren’t many people around during my stay. The common areas were cleaned each day. I saw a dining table in the common area with utensils, a basin for cleaning, and free breakfast (bread with sugar and butter). There’s also a water dispenser with hot and cold water. I liked the small extras like bath towels, toothbrushes, earplugs, hair dryers and slippers for the bathroom. What stood out most was Ah Xiang’s warmth in sending me a bunch of food and restaurant recommendations with Google Map links over WhatsApp—covering local cuisine at famous spots, cafés, and must‑try dishes in Alor Setar. The stay itself was mostly comfortable. To manage expectations, I’d suggest bringing earplugs and eye masks if you’re a light sleeper, because the ambient light from the air‑con “on” button and the sounds from the water pump and the street below can be distracting at night. Other than that, the stay was great and the service even better. The motel’s location is unbeatable.

Everything was perfect, nothing to complain about.

The self‑check‑in felt a bit odd, but the host gave clear instructions and plenty of food suggestions. The room was clean, the bed comfy with a thick duvet, and the AC worked well. The shared bathroom and toilets were tidy, and liquid soap was supplied. There’s a shared kitchenette with a fridge, plates, cutlery and packet coffee, plus a hot/cold water dispenser. The location is within walking distance to Alor Setar’s main attractions and about 10 minutes to the railway station. A big sign outside makes it easy to spot. A few minor points: the place was quiet even with other guests, the floor in the common areas needs mopping, and there was no soap at the washbasins in the showers.
