I appreciated the room’s size, the mountain view, and how close it was to M.G. Road; most staff were welcoming and helpful, and the vegetarian options at breakfast were solid, though the sausages and baked beans were off. I couldn’t find a 3‑4 star Indian hotel with decent non‑veg breakfast elsewhere. Bilal at the front desk took Rs 150 /‑ as a Sikkim tourism fee without giving me a receipt, and when I checked into the Elgin Norkhill I had to pay the same fee again. The principle of collecting money without clear communication bothered me, even though the amount was small. The receptionist at Elgin Norkhill promptly issued a receipt after I repaid the fee. Bilal also charged over 5 K for a Christmas Eve dinner for my family of three, claiming it was compulsory; I knew it wasn’t, but I paid and actually enjoyed the dinner and performances. While I understand the costs of arranging such an event, guests should be informed in advance, not at check‑in when they’re exhausted. The coconut‑cream roll my wife ordered from the patisserie was spoiled, and the chocolate cake my daughter ordered also tasted bad, so the patisserie is best avoided. The bathroom in room 505 was higher than the rest of the room; on my last day I tripped, fell, and badly bruised my left arm during a shower. The Fern Denzong’s shower cubicle isn’t fully sealed—there’s a half‑glass partition—so water leaked to the bathroom entrance. When my wife asked housekeeping for help, the staff said the hotel had no Savlon, Dettol, or any antiseptic to handle such an incident. Fortunately, my wife used her own medical supplies. Be careful around the bathroom and bring your own medication; the hotel isn’t prepared for emergencies.
