The staff spoke Kyoto dialect politely and the inn, founded in the Meiji era, had a retro charm. We could use the shared bath. The pot had water in it beforehand, so I wasn’t sure if they had added it or it was already there. We couldn’t leave the premises from 23:00 to 6:30.

The staff were thoughtful, showing Japanese kindness and hospitality, and I was very impressed. They stored our luggage before check‑in. The bathroom and toilet layout was new. The location was great, close to the train station. The sheets were clean, but the mattresses and tatami floor were old, so watch out if you have dust‑mite allergies.

It’s in a central spot in Kyoto, near the station. The staff were friendly. The place is old, run by the owner, and looks like it’s from the past, but we still loved its charm. It felt like a real Japanese ryokan. Some guests, even Japanese ones, didn’t follow the onsen rules and at times the water got dirty with soap and hair. The owner isn’t to blame and the rules were clear, but it still made us cut our bath short.

It was fantastic value, the location was amazing, and the room was comfortable with a great atmosphere. The public bath isn’t always open, but given the price of the stay, that’s understandable.
