“Would stay in town or if no budget considerations at resort, especially if diving rather than snorkeling…”

Quiet, on beach close to ok snorkeling. Included breakfast good. Expensive since rooms at 1/3 price in town easy to find and access to meals at 1/4 or less with many choices (all meals $9 at this place 3 kilometers from town—transportation a consideration(no grab…). Also more tour/snorkeling choices. Boat issues due to weather (two mornings that week) or waiting to fill conflicted with making flight time in Berau(even if refundable only short notice possible). I left a day early for 9am boat so I had another chance that afternoon or the next day. Talked to owner about $50 dollar refund and he said contact since he wasn’t paid yet. I did a month later and they contacted him—refund denied even with empty bungalows. Not right given his words that morning and the day before

Everything was amazing: the spot right next to stunning coral reefs where you can swim among green turtles, the super quiet and comfy chalet, the delicious food (especially the fantastic breakfasts!), Jun’s helpful tips, and the excursions. The staff were adorable, always smiling and attentive to guests. Absolutely fabulous! I only wish I could have stayed longer.

Maratua Guesthouse is a very pleasant place to experience an authentic island feeling. No luxury facilities like the surrounding resorts but back to basics. With a beautiful view from the restaurant over the ocean where you can see turtles swimming, the nearby beach, the option to step straight into the water to enjoy the beautiful coral reef, the tasty food, and the fantastic staff who think with you and are ready to help you organise trips, this place is a true paradise for a longer stay.

The rooms were decent, but the air conditioning couldn't be adjusted, so at night I suffered from fevers and a guest caught a cold that ruined the diving experience, or I just felt the heat. The property is isolated; the site lists scooter rentals for 10€, while elsewhere on the island prices range from 100,000 to 120,000 IDR, about half that. Nothing nearby. The restaurant serves modest dishes at absurd dollar prices—like $9 for pasta or $5 for nasi goreng, which can be found island‑wide for just over 1 €. I was forced to go to Berau because immigration gave me three days to take a photo, so I requested a deal since I had paid for two extra nights, and the issue was not my fault. When I refused, I was threatened with a statement that we would report your passport number to the police and that writing the truth was an abuse. I reported this behavior to Booking, the police, and immigration.
