“Beautiful setting and comfortable stays, but rigid excursion structure and limited dining options”
We spent three nights at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica in August 2026. The lodge itself is lovely, the rooms comfortable, and we saw great wildlife. The second guide for Lake Sandoval was fantastic, and our assigned waitress in the restaurant was wonderful. At booking we were told activities would be tailor‑made or flexible, but on arrival we were grouped with two other parties (seven people total) and given a single guide for the stay. We were expected to follow whatever the group agreed on. On the second full day we wanted the paid “Ornithology” trip to the macaw clay lick, which required four people. Our guide discouraged it because of a rain forecast that had been wrong the day before, and he instead pushed a five‑hour round‑trip boat ride for piranha fishing (extra fee). Communication was consistently poor. On the last morning we wanted early‑morning birding at the canopy tower, a suggestion from a great guide we met on the second Lake Sandoval trip. Reception said they’d arrange it with our guide, but we never heard back. We only learned the excursion was happening because another guest in our group told us the meetup time that night. One of us is vegan and the other vegetarian, and the restaurant options were very disappointing for a resort of this caliber. The lunch menu stayed the same throughout our three‑night stay, forcing us to repeat meals. Dinner menus changed daily, but the plant‑based option often included an extremely dry chickpea burger. Vegan desserts were almost exclusively plain fruit chunks like apples or…
