“Lovely hotel - but check ahead if you want to dine”
This well‑established spa hotel sits on the edge of town, beside a river at the foot of the mountains. Our room was large, comfortable, and offered a refreshing hillside view. The staff were friendly and professional, and breakfast was good. The hotel has a small private parking lot and there is on‑street parking outside. The night we arrived, a big wedding was happening, and the receptionist warned us it would be noisy and offered a room in another building; we declined and the noise turned out to be fine. The real issue was that the wedding guests had booked out both the restaurant and the bar, so there was no food at the hotel – not even dinner. The only options were a hotel‑run pizzeria with a limited menu or walking into town. A pleasant walk brought us to the main street, but Sighetu has few restaurants and the one the receptionist recommended was booked (probably for a wedding). We ended up eating at a kebab shop. It would have helped if the hotel had informed us beforehand about the potential noise from the wedding and the restaurant closure. This was the first of several experiences that taught me it’s wise to ask ahead whether the hotel restaurant is open if you plan to rely on it, especially in a small town or an isolated location.
