The village is quiet and feels like home, everything we needed was there and we had no inconveniences. The neighboring village has shops and a sashimi place, and a short walk takes us to Kōhira, so shopping is easy. If I ever go to Amami again, I’ll definitely stay here. The only downside is that it’s so comfortable I didn’t want to leave; I ended up just lounging around. The narrow village roads made me a bit nervous at first, but it was fine.

The place is a gem, Toto, the owner has created something truly cozy and practical. I’d give it 10 points for being spotless, cozy, and a perfect blend of traditional and high‑tech with Alexa, smart TV, and modern appliances. It’s one of the best spots we’ve been to in six weeks of our 11‑week Japan tour. But I’m giving it a low score for the second part. We booked only two nights. The first night was perfect. On the second night at 2 AM we heard some noise; I thought something fell, but my husband wasn’t sure. He discovered a big rat in the kitchen. He saw it trapped and knocked it down with a paddle. I was so disgusted I couldn’t even look. I thought it was a mouse. In the morning, my husband grabbed a thong and threw it out the window. He took a picture and I was speechless—it was a huge rat! Luckily it was caught. Imagine sleeping on futons with a monster rat running around, and we also heard another rat on the roof. We told Toto, who came right away to dispose of the rat and cleaned a few items. He said rats are protected in Amami. I looked it up and found a certain protected rat species, but not the one we found in the house. Sorry Toto, you need to do something about it. You allow small children at your place and rats bring diseases.

Toto was a friendly host with a great smile. He paid attention to little details and stocked the house with plenty of travel essentials like extra charging stations, kitchen and bathroom supplies. We loved the beach shack and the location was perfect for our needs.

We loved the place—it was so well organized, clean, modern, and beautiful. The only downside was that the paddleboard required a 3000 yen fee, and the safety gear was billed separately. That was disappointing and misleading compared to other places I’ve stayed at. They provided many things, but all at a cost, so it felt less homey and more like a business.
