The hotel is great and the setting is beautiful. The rooms were comfortable and tidy. We had to walk to another nearby pub for food, and the restaurant at Buck Inn seemed to be closed.

The central location was good. A mix‑up had other guests take our room, but the staff resolved it quickly and satisfactorily. The staff were helpful. Dinner and breakfast at The Lister Arms were very good. The carpets in the hotel lobby were filthy with ingrained dirt—probably the same ones I saw in 1974! The small rooms clearly need refurbishment, which we know is coming soon.

The Dining room although in a separate hotel was clean, comfortable and the service acceptable. When booking in July 2025 I tried to book directly with the Buck Inn, their own system was unable to book us for May 2026. In booking with the system only showed double bedded rooms, and no twin bedded rooms - far from ideal for unattached individuals. On arrival at the hotel I was told that twin bedded rooms had been available, but were now unavailable! The result was 4 unattached individuals had to share double beds. The Buck in needs to sort out its booking availability’s to be more accurate. The hotel’s general areas were very grubby, I have been informed the building is closing for a 10 week refurbishment, which would explain the circumstances

Breakfast was excellent and served at the pub opposite. Evening meals ended at 18:30, but food was still available at the pub across the street.

I walked a few yards to the sister hotel, The Lister, for breakfast, which was fantastic. The remote village feels lovely but is quite isolated from the main road. There’s plenty of parking at the Buck, and it’s great for walking.
