There were no positives. First, the hotel was not cleaned at all. Kitchen utensils were left dirty with oil and food residue on pans and plates. The bathroom had no bathtub, and used toothbrushes were left scattered. There was no TV or tissues, and only the first‑floor bedroom had heating or cooling. The floor was littered with trash and leaf‑like debris. The bed seemed relatively clean at first glance, but when turned over it was full of hair, making it impossible to sleep well. In the morning, while I was still in bed, someone—whether a staff member or a stranger—entered without permission, which was terrifying. There was no garden or mountain view; instead, the view was just bamboo everywhere, which made it feel almost like a burglary. It was the worst experience ever, and I will never return.

The location was close to my business trip destination, but the facility was run by a Chinese grandmother who was hard to communicate with—she couldn’t even say a simple Japanese greeting. There was no bath towel, and because it was a guesthouse, the kitchen, balcony, and living room were cluttered with food and dried fish, just like a normal house. The Wi‑Fi signal was a bit weak, so I ended up using my own pocket Wi‑Fi. Also, the door had no lock, so it seemed possible for someone to break in at night, which worried me a lot.

The surroundings were great.

On the day of my stay a tsunami hit, stopping all trains. I called the guest house, but because it was a natural disaster I could do nothing, yet they wouldn’t refund the reservation fee. I had to take a taxi, which was very expensive. On top of that, the staff couldn’t speak Japanese or English.
