Hanyo Hotel Route Inn has been a surprisingly affordable option for me over the years because it includes free onsen access. Nobody on the staff speaks good English, but everyone tries hard. The rooms are not large, which is typical in Japan. Still, the hotel offers a decent restaurant, very authentic shoe practices (only slippers in the hotel, lockers for shoes at the front desk), and is conveniently located near a supermarket. The onsen tops off the whole experience.
