The staff. The AC in the room dripped on me while I was in bed.
“Despite the beautiful property and the warm welcome from other staff, my interaction with Memory left me feeling unwelco”
The driver who finally picked me up from the airport gave me a warm welcome; the van was clean, and he was courteous, helping with my bags, opening the door, and chatting pleasantly during the ride. At the gate, the guard greeted me warmly, and other staff assisted with my luggage and inquired about my journey. The property itself is beautiful, with lovely gardens, good food, and a peaceful atmosphere, and the facilities were clean. I felt welcomed until I spoke with Memory about the pickup. I understand misunderstandings happen, but I was disappointed that the disagreement seemed to affect how she treated me for the rest of my stay. It did not have to spoil what could have been a lovely experience. Before traveling from the UK, I contacted Burley House by Ulendo because I had heard about the petrol crisis in Malawi and needed to decide whether to hire a car or use the hotel’s airport shuttle. Memory told me the pickup would cost $75. As that was more than hiring a car, I replied that I would arrange my own transport. I had made the same enquiry, and a few hours later told me that the property had agreed to my request. Memory also confirmed this. I understood that the airport pickup was arranged, so I put aside my plans to hire a car or take a taxi, which would have cost about $25. When I arrived at the airport after a long flight, no shuttle was there. I called the property on WhatsApp because I did not yet have a local SIM card. I was told there had been a miscommunication, someone was coming to collect me, and later that the driver was on the way. After waiting, I was picked up and taken to the property. I explained to Memory at reception how disappointing it had been to sort this out at the airport after believing it was settled before I travelled. Instead of apologising, she told me that someone had been answering messages on the property’s behalf and giving guests incorrect information, and that they were investigating it. She then asked me to “meet them halfway” by paying half of the $75 pickup charge. I refused because I had declined the $75 service and believed the later messages had confirmed the arrangement I travelled on. Memory argued that the messages were about my check‑in time, between 3 pm and 6 pm. That made no sense to me: our exchange concerned the airport pickup and included a $75 charge, not a charge to check in. I felt questioned and unwelcome as she asked to see where and how I had booked and the trail of messages. I was so upset that I asked to cancel, pay the last‑minute penalty and book elsewhere. I even asked to use the Wi‑Fi to arrange another hotel, as I had no SIM card.
“The place was like home. We did lots of travel and used Burley House as our home base.”
The breakfasts were hearty and tasty, with a lot of variety—fruit, eggs, sausage, muffins, probably pancakes too, plus good coffee and juice, all served promptly and with a smile. The bedrooms were large and airy, with many windows, and the shower was a treat. Dinner was available on order and generous with a self‑help bar. The patio and gardens were wonderful and equipped with comfortable outdoor furniture. It was quiet and totally pleasant. Great chef and staff who were kind and helpful. It would be helpful if Lilongwe added street signs; every street seems to have a name but they are not posted anywhere.
“Lovely cozy setting . Delicious food”
The staff were friendly and helpful, the food was tasty, the beds were comfortable, and the price was good. The compound was beautiful, with lush gardens, and the house felt very homely. The bathrooms were old, and the food choices were limited.
Everything was perfect, and there was nothing to complain about.
