The place was beautiful and super relaxing, and the staff took great care of breakfast, but we wished we could have stayed longer.

The house and grounds were beautiful, the location great, breakfast food good, and the hosts friendly, but our room and bed were smaller than a queen and too hard.

The inn sits in a charming old farmhouse with plenty of cozy lounges, porches, and patios for unwinding; every morning from 8 to 9:30 a cooked breakfast is served that’s hearty and filling, though a bit bland, and the chef is a very friendly, talkative guy whose booming voice will wake you up if the coffee doesn’t; our Empire room felt bright and beachy, the AC was handy for warm summer nights, and the wifi worked well; we loved walking to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore visitors center, to shops and restaurants in Empire, and to Empire Beach about a mile away; for a beautiful kayak trip we drove a little south to Riverside Canoe and rented kayaks to paddle down the Lower Platte River to Lake Michigan, where we went at 5:30 p.m. and saw only a few other people on the river and plenty of wildlife like otters, kingfishers, and turtles; however, the Empire Room’s small size makes it better suited for a single traveler than a couple, there’s not enough space for two suitcases and no closets, the sink is in the bedroom area and the only light in the bathroom is connected to the fan, so it’s impossible to brush your teeth or use the toilet at night without waking the other person; the bed had a plastic mattress cover, two layers of foam, synthetic sheets, and a synthetic blanket, making it very hot to sleep in on a warm night, and the pillows were all thin; the stairs to the second floor are quite steep, so if you don’t want to haul your suitcases up them, ask for a ground‑floor room; the price for our little room was very high ($280), but that’s Leelanau County in the summer these days.
