The owner was incredibly friendly; because there were no buses at night, he offered to pick me up after the fireworks, and on the last day he took me to the station and gave me a small gift, and we chatted a lot all the way. The only downside was that the bathroom could use a wet‑dry separation.

The place is clean and basic, everything is very simple but it works. It’s outside the village so you need your own transport, and the village itself is very touristy. The accommodation had its heyday.

The room design is old‑school Japanese, a unique experience, and the surroundings are very tidy. It takes about 10 minutes by car to reach Lake Toya, and the mountain road at night is dark with no streetlights.

The owner is extremely friendly and helpful, making sure we were ready for the evening with plenty of dining and activity suggestions. The futon beds were very comfortable. The space felt a bit worn but was spacious enough for two. It’s just a few minutes from town and a quick drive away. It sits right beside the road leading up to the crater from Mt Usu’s 2000 eruption.
