The room is on the 13th floor of a shabby, poorly maintained building where you have to pay 10 centimes to use the elevator. The building’s guard tried to scam us an extra euro to access the elevator shaft. The host was charming when explaining how to check in via WhatsApp. The room itself is refurbished, so nothing to complain about there. Also, the breakfast is included but consists of only a single croissant, and the coffee machine doesn’t work. On the second day the croissant wasn’t even left for us. It’s clear that for the same price you can find something far better and more legitimate.

There is no breakfast. When hot water is turned on in the bathroom, a noise behind the wall starts like a boiler with a motor, which will definitely wake you up if you’re sleeping. Instead of metal hangers, plastic ones would be better and aren’t expensive to buy. The bathroom lacks shelves to store cosmetics, and there’s no hanger to hang a towel. If you use the lift, you have to insert 10 cents into the machine every time to start it.

Coffee and water are available in the vestibule with an espresso machine, and most importantly the view from the balcony overlooks Vesuvius. Great. The problem was poor communication with the owner’s mother, who came twice to collect the tourist tax even though the owner had said you could leave the money on the table after your stay. You couldn’t reach her because she didn’t speak English. Another issue was the lift payment: you can’t go up or down without putting 10 cents into the lift’s machine. This problem arises when you’re not prepared to have that coin with you. It would be good to inform guests about this before they arrive.

The location, the view from the window of the square, and the shower’s constant temperature were positives. By the second night, the neighbor upstairs was blasting a TV; it’s not a hotel but an apartment on the thirteenth floor divided by drywall into a private space plus three guest rooms, so you can’t call reception, only jam toilet paper into your ears and wait for the neighbor to get tired. Breakfast was missing, even though we wrote to the owner, who didn’t reply and ignored us. The bathroom had no hand soap, only a shower gel. Because there was no coffee at the abandoned reception, we sat on the balcony to enjoy the view. Then we noticed the balcony above us was falling apart and we had to leave the apartment. The Wi‑Fi password was written on a sticker with a capital K, but it should have been a lowercase k. After 30 years of traveling in Europe, this is the worst accommodation I’ve had, and it saddens me because the city was beautiful.

“The room is affordable and generally comfortable.”

The balcony view is really good and the bathroom is large and clean. The building is a bit rundown. We booked this place because of the free breakfast, so we wouldn’t waste time looking for a place to have coffee and breakfast. However, we only received it the first morning. The lady in charge said breakfast is served between 9:00‑11:00, but we waited until 10:15 and didn’t get anything.
