“This place has so much potential but is let down by a complete lack of professionalism”
The bed was comfy, the gym was free to use, the place was quiet, and the Wi‑Fi worked well. I should have known from the start that this stay wouldn’t match my expectations. I asked the manager for directions to catch the local buses from León to San Juan, and she sent me a link to a ChatGPT response. Following her advice, I took the shuttle from San Juan to Clandestino, but she dropped me off on the side of the road with no clear indication of where to go. Google Maps was inaccurate, so I had to send pictures to the manager to confirm I was heading the right way. Clear instructions or signage on the hill would have avoided this. When I arrived, there were dirty plates from the owners’ family scattered across the living area – not a good first impression. Only after I had arrived did the manager tell me it was cash‑only, which is problematic in such a remote spot if you don’t have a vehicle. She even had to accompany me to the ATM on the day I left to withdraw cash, which felt uncomfortable. The next day I was cooking lunch in the kitchen and found maggots in the bin. I informed the manager, and she replied, “yeah I know, I saw them yesterday.” The fact that she saw maggots in the bin and didn’t empty it until a customer pointed it out is disgusting; it must have been festering for weeks, so the place was unhygienic. The following morning a possum ran around my room because it isn’t an enclosed space. I packed my bags and left. It felt like a family space, a place for volunteers and managers to hang out, and I felt unwelcome and like a nuisance. I wouldn’t recommend this place unless you have a car or bike. If the manager could do her job properly, the place would have a lot of potential. Oh, and she was homophobic toward me.
