“Muy poco funcional. Incomoda. Cara.”
The location was good, the hall spacious, the rooms’ tatami were new and well kept, the garden was nice, the sliding door pair shut properly, and the duvet was comfortable. After traveling for 16 days across Japan and staying in various accommodations, we thought this place had the worst value for money even in Kyoto during peak season. The listing showed photos from other houses, giving a false impression of size and quality. The photos that did match were missing furniture – the bathroom had no cabinet, no hook, not even a stool to sit and brush teeth (see photos). There wasn’t much light and the garden was inaccessible, amplifying the feeling of confinement. The house is full of rules, some common sense and others overly restrictive, making it feel like you’re being invited to sleep more than paying 221 €/night (see photos and judge for yourself). It’s an old house that was renovated, but many aspects were cut: most sliding doors, except a pair, don’t close well and make a lot of noise (no soundproofing), the frames, ventilation, washing machine didn’t work, toilet space, maintenance… (see photos). The futons were the thinnest we’ve slept on. The doors were very low, 1.72 cm, so you have to stoop throughout the house, and if you get up at night to go to the bathroom you can imagine what will happen. Even though the hall was large enough to set up chairs and a table for breakfast, it didn’t have them or offer them, so you had to sit on the floor or stand to eat and relax. Because of all this, I don’t understand why anyone gave it a 10 for comfort. The owner was overly friendly to get a good rating, had a few unpleasant moments when he had to act outside the learned script. Despite having four rental houses, he seems to care only about cutting costs to keep earning. Note: It was the exception after staying 24 nights in Japan.
