“Expensive pub accommodation at c.£160/ night”
Location – easy drive from Lynmouth. Needs a refurbishment; the old pub is fine but the rooms and bathroom are not great.

I’ve known and liked Withypool. I’ve known the Royal Oak for 50 years, last visited it about 10 years ago. I used to love it, always took friends there for the excellent food and service. NOT NOW. The Royal Oak has become The Royal Pit. It’s now sunk to abysmal status. I would certainly never take friends there again under this management. To be greeted by a note on the door, saying the keys to our room were in an envelope between two cushions, and seeing nobody, was a shock. When we did see the manager next evening, I was told I didn’t need the heating, it was still summer, look the doors were open! I did get the heating after words. The place smelled of mildew, wet dog and gone over food. We had to ask twice for more loo paper. The beds were appalling, I am still suffering from a bad back from trying to sleep in them 4 days later! Breakfast was edible… just about, despite the bad kitchen smell. My advice? Do not go there!

The spot was superb—quiet, friendly, and helpful. Breakfast was excellent. Wi‑Fi only kicked in on day two, but we were already ready for a break. The TV had no sound, yet we appreciated the calm after that. The only downside was the many stairs.

Walking the Two Moors Way with my mum last week, this was the highlight of all our stays. A staff member fell ill (wishing them a speedy recovery!), but the team ensured we could access our room, with Jake behind the bar and other staff—including the village—looking after us. They went out of their way to make us comfortable and provide everything we needed. I had the best pint of Exmoor Gold I’ve ever tasted, the fish and chips were dreamy, the sorbet was delicious, and breakfast was top‑class. We enjoyed a night in the bar, and the locals were warm and welcoming. I’ll definitely return for another stay or just a session :D. I forgot to mention earlier that the shower required turning the isolation switch in the bedroom on and off; the electric shower unit didn’t work. Other than that, it was a perfect stay.

This was a flawless stop on our bike trip. It was peaceful and quiet. The pub downstairs served exceptional food and the service was fantastic. The room was beautiful, the bathroom stunning! Overall, the customer service was excellent. If we ever travel to that side of the UK again, we’ll definitely come back! Thank you.
