The spot is right near the ocean—just a 15‑minute walk with a kid in tow—and you can easily find good cafés along the way. We enjoyed the swimming pool and the beach at EKHO Surf hotel, which you can access with a day pass. The villa’s garden felt like a botanical garden, full of palm squirrels and geckos, and the hostess’s dogs were a delight. Breakfast was plentiful and tasty, and the hostess even gave us some cheap, delicious mangoes that we couldn’t find elsewhere; this seems to be a local perk. The hostess was nice, but communication was tricky: only one spoke English, and even he was more comfortable in French. We were bothered by insects in the apartment—a big cockroach appeared when we arrived after a long trip, and there were many ants. During breakfast, flies swarmed the garden, which was annoying for hygiene reasons, though this is common in Sri Lanka. We were upset to discover that the path to the ocean was littered with rubbish, not mentioned in the description. The small lake looked like wastewater, and on a hot, windless day the smell outside was awful. There was no Wi‑Fi in our apartment, which was inconvenient; Wi‑Fi was only available near the main building, and the hostess said they’d buy a router soon.
