“Frustrating and disappointing”
The Auberge de la Source is set beautifully in the Normandy countryside and our room was fine and as expected. We had booked dinner for a fine‑dining experience, and that’s when problems began. We were booked for 8:00 pm, but the confirmation said 8:15 pm—odd, but fine. When we arrived at 8:00 pm I mentioned we were early and asked for a drink in the bar, but there was no bar. Instead we were invited to sit by the blazing log fire, which looked inviting but offered very little space; I ended up about 6 inches from another diner. To get a bit more room I moved closer to the fire, but we quickly felt too hot. We had a drink, but no more was offered. After about 45 minutes my wife asked if we could go to our table. We ordered a bottle of wine, were poured one glass, and then the waiter disappeared with the bottle. Our food arrived. My wife ordered the beef tomato, which didn’t really feel like a main course and the choices were very limited. I ordered a steak with foie gras; the steak was small and tough, and the foie gras portion was about the size of the tip of a small finger. We eventually got the waiter back and asked for our wine back, which took about 5 minutes. We sat at our table for about 20 minutes after our main course with no service. We then asked the waiter for the dessert menu, waited 15 minutes, and a reluctant waitress finally came over. By then it was about 10:00 pm and we were the only people in the restaurant. We were asked if we wanted anything; I said it was too late and we had lost interest. The waitress translated that as “OK, you’re full then, no problem,” which seemed like a misunderstanding. Overall, given the luxury prices—one night with dinner cost €650—it was very frustrating and disappointing.
