I had a lovely stay at de Karanganjar; the staff were super helpful and friendly. The price is very worth it, and there’s plenty to see around the plantation.

The surrounding nature was pleasant, but the property itself was poorly maintained and the renovation was subpar.

I spent a few days at the De Karangajah coffee plantation and it felt like stepping back into the Dutch colonial era, complete with two museums full of small, intriguing exhibits and a café that offers Indonesian food and excellent coffee from 9am to 4.30pm—something to consider if you’re staying there. The place is a time capsule and I loved the peace and quiet, although weekends bring a flood of visitors as locals love to snap photos; meeting them was a highlight. I rate the whole experience a perfect 10, though the room could use an upgrade—it’s adequate and clean, the ceiling fan works, hot water is plentiful, but it still feels a bit dated.

The highlight was everything else, but I struggled to find dinner options.

It’s a very unique spot, set in a coffee plantation surrounded by nature and tranquility. The layout is simple yet impeccably clean and spacious, and the veranda beside the rooms features interesting gamelan instruments and a personal museum of the plantation owners. We enjoyed pleasant walks through fields of coffee, pineapple, and cassava, and I highly recommend this place for anyone seeking some calm. Getting there isn’t easy and sometimes Grab drivers get lost, so Lydia’s efficient help was essential.
