“A wonderful way of travelling but be CAREFUL”
I had a wonderful time aboard the MS MONTECARLO; the crew were friendly and helpful with smiles and genuine hospitality, the food was fresh, tasty, and varied daily, my cabin was beautiful and spotless with a lovely bathroom and great comfort, the sundeck had a nice pool and comfy deckchairs, and everything ran smoothly and seemed well organised – even the sailors fixed my trolley that lost a wheel on the flight from Cairo to Aswan, giving my suitcase a new life as a pirate with a wooden leg, so I highly recommend the ship and crew for anyone seeking a relaxing Nile cruise. However, I have travelled a lot and this was by far the most complicated and frustrating experience; travellers must pay close attention to what they book and under which conditions, always check the departure day and city as some listings are misleading or unclear, and don’t let managers pressure you into expensive excursion packages – you’re not required to accept them. I paid USD 3,220 and was first put in a tiny, dark, worn‑out cabin on the MS TUT III with a stained window, a tired look, and awful breakfast; the crew forced us to sit with other guests even though tables were empty, and when I ordered tea I was almost forced to take coffee instead, with the absurd claim that “no more tea” existed. Fortunately, while still in Aswan I negotiated a ship change, and we eventually sailed on the MS MONTECARLO, which was ten times better – clean, bright, friendly staff, and a completely different atmosphere. Lesson learned: always double‑check the cruise name, departure port, and what’s really included, and remember you don’t have to tolerate poor ships or pushy staff.
