The House of Elsie Historic Bed and Breakfast

“Little gem with fantastic food.”

I loved that the historic property had so much charm, the food was excellent, and extra care was taken to accommodate my husband’s celiac diet; Larry and Crystal were attentive and kind hosts who tried to anticipate our every need. The property itself wasn’t particularly detailed, but our room’s bathroom was adjacent to the bedroom in the hallway; it was a lovely bathroom, though it only had a claw‑foot tub and no shower, which might not suit everyone’s preference and made nighttime visits a bit more difficult; next time I would bring a nightlight or book a room with a self‑contained smaller bathroom that includes a shower.

The bed was comfortable, the owners were friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was amazing (if you can eat it all) with much of it locally sourced from numerous fruits grown just outside the house; one could spend a week looking at the old artifacts. If you have mobility issues, the massive stairs to the bedrooms are a challenge, and the four stone steps at the entrance, with no handrail, made entering a scary experience; the owners could benefit from extra help, as cat hair was everywhere.

“Had a great stay, central, quiet, friendly and tasty!”

We had four of us, so the two double beds were spot‑on. The spot is right in the middle of the wine country and a quick drive to town. Breakfast was a real treat—blueberry sourdough pancakes, bacon, farm‑fresh eggs, homemade sourdough toast with a dozen jams, orchard tomatoes, blackberries, peaches, bread pudding, and eggs benedict with hollandaise made right before us. The hosts, Larry and Chrystal, were super friendly and kept their two cats in the common area, so we never felt cramped.

After more than two decades of traveling, the House of Elsie tops our list. It’s a stone’s throw from NoTL and a handful of wineries, and the whole place feels steeped in history with a great vibe. Larry and Chrystal make you feel at home instantly, sparking lively chats and giving killer local tips—plus a re‑enactment in Old Fort Erie that was a blast.

The House of Elsie is a well‑kept heritage home, decked out in antique furniture and art, surrounded by a lovely garden. Chrystal, the host, loves sharing the property’s history and serves homemade breakfasts at a relaxed communal table. Historians of the Niagara region would adore it, though the old‑fashioned bathroom doesn’t give you a truly refreshing shower.
