“Beautiful place, expensive for what it is.”
AbCa’s lodge is beautiful, a well‑crafted property with many lovely touches that blend comfort, aesthetics, and nature. This was our second visit, and while it’s still gorgeous, more improvements have been made and are underway. We had an issue when a big storm caused water to enter our room; the team resolved it quickly and made sure we were fine the next day. My partner can’t tolerate spicy food, so they prepared a special meal for him so he could enjoy it without getting sick. The lady who cooks the eggs in the morning is great—happy, cheerful, and full of energy, making breakfast a lot of fun! The price is high for what you get; we paid about £80 a night and had no hot water, with the shower pressure so low it was just a trickle. You’re paying for beautiful grounds, but hot water for a shower should be included at that price. We were there in the off‑season, so it was quiet, which meant we had to schedule food at set times. This wasn’t a problem for us, but when my partner ordered dinner for 9 pm, we were told we had to come at 8:30 instead. It’s only 30 minutes, so we ignored it. Later, we were told that although the buffet breakfast ran from 7–10 am, it would be better if we came at 8 am since another group of guests were arriving then. We don’t like eating early, so we said no and would come later, and the staff seemed annoyed. I think they wanted to finish early and we were stopping that. We also don’t eat lunch, but there was an underlying sense that we had to eat because it’s profit‑making. For me it feels as though the staff are trained to push food and tours, which is normal for any place, but it can be done without making guests feel they must eat if they don’t want to.
