Located in Wernigerode's Old Town, the 3-star superior Altora Eisenbahn Themenhotel offers comfortable rooms within connected, timber-framed buildings and a modern extension. The hotel's atmospheric restaurant, 1835, features steam trains outside and miniature railway drink delivery. Explore the Harz mountains, ride the Bimmelbahn steam engine, or take a horse-drawn carriage ride, all within walking distance of the town hall, castle, and marketplace.

The food was great.

The beds were nice, very good for families, and the location is good. We arrived in the morning. I talked to reception about parking, it was fine. When we came back at 17:00 for check‑in, we were handed a large discount booklet for the city, which could have been handed out the first time we spoke with reception. The room has glass doors to the toilet without sealing strips. It rattles and smells throughout the room when someone uses the toilet. We talked to reception about dining in the restaurant and made a reservation, but when we came to eat they hadn’t finished setting up the reservation, so there was only space at the back. Far from the train. Slow and heavy check‑in, you have to type name, surname, date of birth on everyone. No link is sent to pre‑enter.

I finally got to fulfill my wish and spend a few days breathing railway air. The hotel sits right on the BW and Wernigerode train station. Every morning for breakfast you could already admire the steam locomotives. Walking with my dog always led to the station. The room was good and well equipped. The restaurant served very tasty food, and of course the beer was not to be forgotten. The city always offers something new to discover, and a city tour is highly recommended. The staff were very nice and helped us with questions. We’ll gladly return. The only downside was a construction site in front of the room, but that’s beyond the hotel’s control.

Cucumber salad, egg salad, tomato salad. At check‑in we were immediately denied the option to book dinner at the window restaurant, which was only for walk‑in customers, not hotel guests. By the way, the seats were empty in the evenings… No housekeeping on any of the four days. Only after repeated reminders did we get towels and toilet paper at 18:30. Street noise was very loud, even the TV was awkwardly placed on the side with a small device. The owner promised to email us after check‑out, but he didn’t, and we were told that due to new staff there were problems and that a generous response would be given, but nothing happened; we’ve been waiting until now, and now we’re posting this review. We’ve stayed there multiple times and are very disappointed.
