“Exceptional in every way!”

We had a wonderful stay at Nunukan Island Resort! Everything was top notch! The staff, facilities, food, snorkeling was fantastic and truly memorable! The snorkeling was excellent on the house reef. We saw turtles, rays and a variety of colorful fish. The facilities are magnificent and the meals are fine dining. Strolling the walkway between Vigin Cocoa and Nunukan is fantastic at Sunset. “A small paradise.”

I’ve tried many luxury, diving, and budget resorts for diving, but I never expected Nunukan to be this good. It was a small paradise, and I was so sad to leave that I cried. 1. House Reef – House Reef is truly the best. My wife and I usually prefer to dive straight into a house reef for free diving, and Nunukan’s house reef is amazing. Even if you can’t dive, snorkeling lets you see a lot on the surface. Within the first 10 meters you can see humphead parrotfish, grey reef sharks, and many reef fish. Turtles appear everywhere; if you don’t chase them, the turtles will pass by on their own. The reef board is so good that divers come from the house reef. 2. Diving Center / Activities – My husband can’t scuba dive, so I did all the dives alone (sorry if the name is misspelled). I did three dives and rented all gear except the dive computer; the gear was in great condition. The dive master guided us excellently, and everyone was friendly. I also booked Kakaban tour and other non‑reef tours; the boat was good, and when we saw a dolphin from afar, the captain stopped the boat. The dolphin stayed with us for a long time—truly amazing. 3. Food – The food is really good, especially Indonesian dishes. 4. Resort scenery – The sunrise, sunset, birds, and bats from the balcony are all beautiful. It’s a bit farther from the main island of Maratua, so it’s quiet and great. Even in the dry season, the wind on the balcony in the morning or late afternoon is refreshing. 5. Staff – Everyone is friendly and warm, so I felt very close to them. 6. Connected to Virgin Cocoa – The island is small, so outdoor activity is limited; if you like walking, you can cross the bridge to Virgin Cocoa. Especially at night, crossing the bridge gives a romantic sunset with the sound of water. It’s hard to reach from Maratua’s main island and you have to time it, but I think it’s the best choice. If I visit Maratua next season, I’ll definitely come back here. Don’t hesitate if you’re considering this place—it's truly paradise. The only downside was that, because we visited in the low season, the resort didn’t offer massages and other services. Still, the low season made it even quieter and better.

A place surrounded by nature that feels like it’s been taken from Borneo’s forest by the sea. The staff care is perfect and all the services you can imagine are available. A special shout‑out to the kitchen, which is sublime in its simplicity. Everything is perfect thanks to Brat and his crew who manage everything with care and affection, making you feel pampered like at home.

Beat and his crew nail it here: top‑class service in a prime spot. The culinary scene lights up and the diving vibe amps up too. I've rarely seen such a gorgeous reef – pure nature and a real hidden gem. Warmth is a big deal here. A connecting pier leads to a neighboring island where you can do fantastic yoga. All in all, a dreamy place where you feel completely at ease. I’d love to come back!
