The bed was huge and the bathroom was spacious, plus there was a tiny kitchen in the room and the AC worked well; the host was friendly and pleasant. However, as a solo female traveler I was uneasy because the windows in each room were adjacent and only lightly tinted, so during the day you could see everything inside and there were no curtains, and the front door had the same issue, letting you see people’s shadows walking by. The plates were dirty and sticky, the bathroom was unclean with toothpaste on the mirror and dirt in the sink, etc.

“A very unpleasant experience”

I was greeted with a warm and friendly attitude when I entered the room. I stayed for three days and paid in cash, including for breakfast, which contained two hair curls that made me vomit, and I was also charged 500 rupees for laundry. A week later they contacted me asking why I hadn’t paid, which was very unpleasant.

The room I received was a good size, with a comfortable bed topped with a mosquito net, a small kitchen, and a reasonably sized bathroom. The host was very lovely and welcoming, but the room had a strong mold smell that made it hard to breathe and sleep. On the second night I couldn’t enter my room because the already difficult-to-use lock jammed; I spent 45 minutes trying to reach the owner—calling on WhatsApp and knocking on the door—before he responded and opened the door with a master key. I understand that this can happen, and it wouldn’t have left a weird aftertaste if not during check‑out, the lady of the house had not tried to overcharge me, asking for a higher price than what was listed in my booking. Only after a brief discussion was I allowed to pay the originally agreed price. When I mentioned the mold smell, it was dismissed with the response: “My room smells like that too, it’s just the climate.” Even if it’s a budget accommodation, I should not be exposed to mold in the room.

“Enjoyable stay in middle of Weligama”

The owner was very friendly and helpful. The location was excellent, close to the beach and restaurants. The ensuite room was clean and had a mosquito net. The Wi‑Fi was fast and there was a desk in the room. Great value, the rating is undeservedly low.

I appreciated the hospitality of the hosts; they helped us with everything and even prepared a meal for us. The apartment is near the beach, stores, and restaurants. The Wi‑Fi was really good.
