The staff and owners are fantastic, the food is amazing, and I always opt for half board.

The Shiga Swiss Inn is located at an elevation of 1,600 meters, offering direct ski-in/ski-out access to the central slopes. Guests can relax in the hot springs and enjoy complimentary parking and shuttle services. A buffet-style restaurant serves breakfast and dinner. The hotel provides easy access to nearby restaurants and bus stops via a paid shuttle service.

The room was comfortable, the onsen and common areas were great, and the food was good. I had no complaints, but the location is quite isolated, so nightlife is non‑existent.

The spot was ideal—right in the middle of a ski slope that isn’t heavily trafficked by all the ski schools. The staff were friendly and offered many restaurant suggestions, and the room view was breathtaking. However, the building feels old, the wifi doesn’t work, which is a real issue for workcations (phone internet works fine). It was also odd that we had to readjust the hotel‑rented gear ourselves, even though it was clear we weren’t experienced.

The location is perfect and the price is unbeatable. There are no nearby restaurants, but the hotel provides a buffet breakfast and dinner (shoutout to the tempura master). I had a great time and would recommend it as a fantastic budget option. The futons were a bit thin, but adding a second one from the closet made a huge difference. The downstairs wifi stopped working for a couple of days, but mobile reception was fine, so it wasn’t a big deal.

Ski‑in, ski‑out right in the middle of the mountain. One employee—maybe the owner—approached me at checkout, pointed a finger at my face, and shouted “get out, get out” when I asked about a tax fee he was charging. He was upset I was asking questions because I hadn’t encountered that tax before in Japan. Because of this, he wouldn’t give us the shuttle back to the bus stop, even though that service is included when you book the room and there’s no other way to get in and out of Swiss Inn unless you’re on skis. His behavior was physically aggressive and abusive; we couldn’t discuss it, just yelled. We were scared, so we complied and left. We walked down the steep, icy ski hill with all our suitcases—the only option, as there were no taxis. We made it safely down, took the gondola up, and caught the bus on time. Would I recommend this place? No, because of the aggressive behavior. Being in the middle of the mountain means you’re at the hotel’s mercy. The building is run down with junk hanging everywhere. Old ski equipment was sold as half‑price compared to other places, which wasn’t true. My husband had to change his skis after the first day, and even then he had trouble with them. The room was old, with holes in the walls and carpet. The buffet was overpriced, so we bought a frozen meal instead, which saved us a lot.
