Lear House is quirky, interesting, and different from the usual. It reminds me of Oamaru itself with its stone walls and artwork, and it's definitely worth a visit.

The room was decent, located just below the host’s residence. I booked with breakfast included, but it was underwhelming: only a small bottle of milk, some stale fruit, and an uncertainly fresh jam; there was no bread at all. In the morning we expected a proper breakfast, yet the host never showed up, so we boiled water ourselves and ate the bread we had bought—quite disappointing.

The rooms were characterful and spacious, offering lovely garden views. Walking distance to town was easy. Jay and Austen were brilliant hosts, and the breakfast of homemade muesli and bread was delicious.

The charming en‑suite on the lower level of a beautiful home was private. All good.

Austen and Jay were fabulous hosts. We cannot recommend this place enough. The space was comfortable, spotless, and every detail was thoughtfully considered. A special place.
