“Shambles, run down, not fit for the public, will cost you an arm and a leg.”
The family looking after the place was lovely, down to earth and helpful, but they lacked support from the owner and were thrown into the deep end dealing with the mess of the site. On the second night we ordered food to be delivered to the bar because there was no kitchen. After a long day at Longleat, my partner’s mum and I returned to the chalet to get ready for bed, only to find insects in the bedding at midnight. We saw bugs crawling in all the beds. We told the caretakers, who seemed shocked. We had a four‑hour drive home at midnight because nothing could be done or offered to relocate us. After leaving, we emailed and messaged the owner asking for a full refund, claiming it was disgusting. He spoke to my partner on the phone and they made a reasonable offer, but the owner never paid or responded. Weeks later, on 12 October, the owner said he wouldn’t refund because it wasn’t his fault, claiming he had to pay for tests to check what was in the chalet. He then accused us of blackmailing him and brought up a family member’s death. He also said we’d paid about £300 to stay, had to buy take‑aways and Aldi food, and that he sent us £50. I think this is an absolute joke and I don’t recommend staying here. Avoid at all costs. The owner also told us that there was no on‑site kitchen because of an issue, so after a 4½‑hour drive we had to leave the site for food. On arrival and checkout, I was itchy and irritated, so I used the shower after sitting in the car for hours to freshen up while my partner and his mum went off‑site to Aldi. I went into the shower to find no hot water and it was freezing. I packed my stuff again and returned to the chalet. While standing there, the owner’s friends walked by, so I asked when the hot water would be on, thinking it was related to the kitchen issue. I was told the showers were on a different system and should have hot water. The man tested them and it seemed a regular occurrence that showers needed constant maintenance. I finally got my shower, and my partner and his mum returned from Aldi. We also had to wait for our gas canister to make tea. The furniture seemed hastily arranged; the mats/carpet had just been put in because of flooring. The cupboard under the sink was covered in building dust and wood chips, so we couldn’t store our stuff. The door to the chalet was difficult to secure, and I spent minutes getting soaked in the rain trying to lock it. At that point my face had swollen, especially my lip, which looked like a blister had formed. We went up to the bar for a chilled evening before heading to Longleat in the morning. All was fine. We got up in the morning and went out for the day. We returned from Longleat.
