Alleppey

Alleppey is a grid of trading canals and backwater channels built around Vembanad Lake. You move through this amphibious terrain using public wooden ferries, hand-rowed canoes, or motorized houseboats. Expect low-slung bridges, palm-shaded waterways, and village life lived at the water's edge.

Alleppey was planned in 1762 by Raja Kesavadas, the Prime Minister of Travancore. He cut canals through coastal marshes to connect interior backwaters with the Arabian Sea, creating a port city for coir and spice exports.
