Bacalar

Freshwater limestone basin, Mayan history, and strict water rules.

introduction

Overview

Bacalar sits on a 42-kilometer long freshwater lagoon fed by underground cenotes. The town operates at a slower tempo than the northern Riviera Maya, with strict environmental laws governing the water. You navigate the settlement easily on foot or by bicycle along the water's edge. Life revolves entirely around the lagoon's changing depths and ecological preservation.

Arriving from Chetumal Airport

Chetumal International Airport sits 40 kilometers south. A fixed-rate taxi to Bacalar costs 500 MXN and takes 35 minutes.

Protected freshwater microbialites

Bacalar holds one of the world's largest living collections of freshwater stromatolites. Touch them and you destroy centuries of slow growth.

Wednesday lagoon motor ban

Motorboats are banned from the lagoon every Wednesday to reduce pollution. Plan your sailing, kayak, or paddleboard excursions for this day.

food

Freshwater fish and Maya-Yucatecan spices

Bacalar’s kitchen reflects its regional place in Quintana Roo, balancing Yucatecan slow-roasted pork dishes with seafood sourced from the Caribbean coast and citrus marinades. You find upscale plant-focused dining alongside traditional street carts surrounding the main square. Fresh fruit juices like chaya with pineapple are standard breakfast accompaniments across every local diner.

history

A short history

Bacalar began as Sian Ka'an Bakhalal, a Maya settlement recorded around 435 AD. Spanish forces conquered the area in 1543, but English pirates repeatedly looted the outpost via the Hondo River and Pirate Channel. The Spanish built Fort San Felipe in 1733 to secure trade. During the 1848 Caste War, Maya rebels captured the town, controlling it until Mexican federal troops retook it in 1901.
