East Bali's slow coastal base for diving and water palaces.
introduction
Candidasa is East Bali's quiet coastal base, set along the Lombok Strait under the shadow of Mount Agung. A single main road carries traffic through town, backed by palm groves and facing concrete seawalls that replaced the eroded sand beaches. You come here for dive boats, royal water palaces, and slower mornings away from southern crowds. Movement centers on scooters or private drivers, as public transit is virtually non-existent.
Airport transfer reality
Drivers at DPS quote inflated flat rates for Candidasa. Book a metered Grab or pre-arrange hotel pick-up for roughly IDR 450,000.
Double-ikat weaving center
Nearby Tenganan is one of only three places worldwide producing double-ikat woven geringsing cloth.
Bypass the vanishing beach
1980s offshore reef mining eroded Candidasa's beach. Plan to swim at Virgin Beach or hotel pools rather than the seawall.

Karangasem cuisine turns on fresh catches and aromatic spice pastes. Local warungs grill sate lilit—minced reef fish bound with coconut milk and wrapped around lemongrass stalks—over open coconut husks. Pork or duck lawar mixed with green beans and fresh galangal appears on lunch menus around midday and sells out by 14:00.

Traditional Karangasem feasts are shared from a central platter called megibung. Ask larger warungs or resort kitchens a day in advance to arrange one.
Upscale hotel dining accepts major credit cards, but family warungs along Jalan Raya Candidasa require rupiah cash.
history
Candidasa began as a quiet fishing village known as Teluk Kehen, clustered around its 12th-century beachside temple. Tourism accelerated in the late 1970s as visitors sought alternatives to Kuta. Rapid construction led to reef blasting for lime manufacturing in the 1980s, which destroyed the natural barrier and eroded the sandy coast within a decade.
Pura Candidasa Founded
The temple is established on the slopes above the bay, dedicated to goddess Hariti and local fertility rites.
Tourism Arrives
Backpackers discover Teluk Kehen; local owners rename the village Candidasa to attract travellers.
Reef Blasting & Erosion
Lime kilns extract coral from the offshore reef. Waves strip away the white sand beach in under ten years.
Seawall Construction
Concrete T-bar groynes are installed along the coastline to prevent further coastal erosion.
Cultural & Eco Hub
Candidasa positions itself as a low-density base for exploring East Bali's water palaces and diving sites.
where to stay
Choose your base by your mobility. If you want to walk to dinner and dive shops without hiring transport, stay in Central Candidasa. If you want manicured grounds and private beach access, choose Manggis. Choose Padangbai if early morning boat trips to Gili or Lombok drive your schedule.
Live rates, matched to the areas above.

transport
Candidasa sits along the primary East Bali coastal artery. Getting around requires hiring a scooter or renting a car with driver, as municipal public transit does not run here.
Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) से
Use official airport taxi counters or Grab app. Negotiated street taxis charge more.
Pre-book through your hotel for fixed pricing and driver waiting at arrivals.
Best for local transit around town and Virgin Beach. Requires international driving permit.
The main road lacks continuous sidewalks. Walk facing traffic and carry a torch at night as street lighting is sparse.
Perama regional buses are currently unreliable. Private drivers or scooters are required for trips beyond town.
Petrol is sold in glass vodka bottles at roadside stalls for IDR 12,000 to 15,000 per liter.
Travel to DPS airport takes 90 minutes normally, but budget 2.5 hours on Friday afternoons due to Sanur bypass congestion.
cost
Candidasa costs significantly less than Seminyak or Canggu. Accommodations and warung meals offer solid value, though imported spirits and private driver day-rates match southern Bali standards.
A plate of nasi campur or sate lilit with iced tea at a local spot.
Covers 10 hours including fuel for trips to Tirta Gangga and Lempuyang.
Includes equipment, boat transfer, and divemaster for local dive spots.
Includes sunbed use at most beachside warungs if you order food or drinks.
seasonality
APR – MAY
Calm seas and moderate humidity. Excellent underwater visibility for divers and manageable hotel rates.
JUN – AUG
Dry season peak with cool breezes and dry roads. Book accommodation early for July and August.
SEP – OCT
Shoulder season with warm water and low visitor counts. Best time for quiet exploring without peak prices.
NOV – MAR
Wet season brings afternoon downpours and ocean swell. Dive visibility drops, but lush inland landscapes peak.
practicalities
Wear a sarong and sash to enter Pura Candidasa or water palaces. Rentable at entrance gates for IDR 10,000–20,000.
Do not swim past the seawall breakwaters at Candidasa. Head to Virgin Beach or Blue Lagoon for safe ocean swimming.
ATMs line the main road near major hotels, but machines run out of cash on holiday weekends. Carry backup notes.
Tropical UV is high year-round. Refill water bottles at your hotel to manage heat and reduce plastic waste.
Macaques live around the hillside temple across the lagoon. Keep food hidden and hold onto sunglasses and phones.
