food

Highland trout and microbrews

Clarens centers its food culture around small, owner-run kitchens and local craft brewing. Freshwater trout from nearby streams appears on most menus, served either cold-smoked or pan-seared with butter. Winter temperatures bring hearty venison pies and slow-cooked stews to the table.Weekend dining requires planning because central tables fill by early evening. Expect simple service without high-end pretensions. Prices remain reasonable compared to South African coastal cities.
