Kaikoura

Kaikoura sits on a narrow coastal strip where snow-capped mountains drop straight into the Pacific Ocean. A steep submarine trench two kilometres deep begins right off the coast, driving nutrient-rich currents that feed resident sperm whales and large fur seal colonies. You come here to interact with the ocean and eat fresh crayfish, not to browse shops. Plan around sea conditions, because southern ocean swells decide whether boats launch each morning.

Kaikoura translates directly from Māori as 'eat crayfish', and local seafood defines every menu in town. Rock lobster is caught in traps along the rocky reefs just offshore. You eat it cooked simply with garlic butter at seaside caravans or sitting at timber tables in West End taverns. Māori settled the peninsula eight centuries ago, utilizing the rich marine resources and building defended pa sites on high headlands. European shore-whaling stations established operations at Fyffe quay in the 1840s, hunting right whales to near extinction. In November 2016, a massive magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Kaikoura, lifting parts of the seabed by up to six metres and severing road and rail links for over a year.

Kaikoura has no public bus system or rideshare platforms like Uber. Walk around the town core, but rent a vehicle or bring your own car if you plan to visit trailheads, northern crayfish vans, or distant accommodation zones.
