Milan

Capital of Italian industry, design, and exact timing.

introduction

Overview

Milan runs on efficiency, money, and precise schedules. You move through it easily on five metro lines (M1, M2, M3, M4, and M5) and orange vintage trams. The city trades postcard ruins for modern architecture, global fashion houses, and structured social rituals. Expect higher prices than the rest of Italy, compensated by reliable transit and fast service.

M4 line connects Linate in 12 minutes

The M4 metro line links Linate Airport directly to San Babila station. The trip takes twelve minutes and costs standard urban fare.

The Last Supper requires early booking

Leonardo da Vinci's mural sits in the Santa Maria delle Grazie refectory. Tickets open three months in advance and sell out in minutes.

Museum closures cluster on Mondays

Most civic museums close every Monday. Plan church visits and private gallery tours like Fondazione Prada for the start of the week.

food

Saffron, butter, and the 19:00 drink

Milanese cooking relies on butter, lard, and rice rather than olive oil and dried pasta. Risotto alla Milanese gets its yellow tint and savory weight from saffron and marrow. Cotoletta alla Milanese must be a bone-in veal chop fried in clarified butter.Aperitivo is a daily utility, not a tourist gimmick. Between 19:00 and 21:00, buying a drink gets you access to food at the counter. In Milan, this meal often replaces dinner entirely.

  • Order cotoletta col manico

The authentic veal cutlet includes the bone. Thin, boneless chicken cutlets are commercial shortcuts.
