Milford Sound

Milford Sound is a glacial fjord at the end of State Highway 94 in Fiordland. You arrive by boat, light aircraft, or a single two-lane road cut through granite walls. Rain falls here over 180 days a year, turning rock faces into vertical torrents within hours. Plan around the weather and the two-hour drive from Te Anau.

Dining at Milford Sound is strictly functional. The visitor terminal runs a large cafe serving hot meat pies, sandwiches, and espresso to cruise passengers. Sit-down dining exists solely at PioPio Restaurant inside Milford Sound Lodge, which serves local Fiordland crayfish, venison, and South Island wines. Bring snacks from Te Anau if you operate outside standard lunch hours.

Māori hunters visited Piopiotahi for greenstone long before European sealers arrived. Donald Sutherland built the first European hut in 1877, predicting tourist interest despite the absolute isolation. Choose your location based on driving tolerance. Staying in Milford Sound means zero morning drive time but requires booking months ahead. Staying in Te Anau offers wider hotel choices, restaurants, and shops, but adds four hours of round-trip driving along State Highway 94.
