history
A short history
Founded around a sacred spring, Nemausus grew into a major Roman colony under Emperor Augustus. Veterans from the Egyptian campaigns settled here, giving the city its crest of a crocodile chained to a palm tree. Textile mills made Nîmes wealthy in the 17th century, developing the sturdy cotton cloth that became known globally as denim.

Nîmes is primarily a walking city. You do not need a car inside the central ring boulevard. The Tango bus network covers outer districts, while regional TER trains connect the city to Arles, Avignon, and Montpellier in under 30 minutes.
