Before European settlement, Yugambeh language people inhabited the coastal land between the Logan and Tweed rivers. The area was originally named Elston until local hotelier Jim Cavill renamed his venue the Surfers Paradise Hotel in 1925. The name was officially adopted by the town in 1933, launching a century of high-rise holiday development.
