“Good, but needs to do better.”
This could (and I'm sure will) be an outstanding place to stay. It is fairly recently reopened after a big renovation, and I believe it is under new ownership, so there will be a bedding in period. There are some tweaks required in staff training if the owners want to provide a true 5 star experience to their guests. Some staff were excellent, particularly in the restaurant. Others were not so exemplary. The room was ok, although the decor was not to our taste, and I struggle to think whose taste wallpaper covered in beetles would appeal to. A good size for one night, and the bathroom was nice. Food in the Cedar restaurant was good, but didn't blow us away, and the portions were small. I think most people want good, hearty, wholesome food these days, and prefer to leave a restaurant feeling full. The head waiter/restaurant manager was excellent, however, and really looked after us well. This is trying to be a 5 star hotel, and has priced itself at that level, but it falls short of the quality of many of its competitors in the area, particular where service standards are concerned. We waited a long time for a member staff to appear when we arrived to check in, and there was no apology offered for keeping us waiting. I don't know if the hotel is understaffed, or if they operate on a skeleton staff on a Sunday, but this is not something we've experienced at a 5 star hotel previously. Breakfast was fairly disappointing. Room decor, as I've mentioned, was not to our taste. Hotel grounds weren't very well maintained
