The hotel’s historical significance as the sole lodging for sea travelers between 1927 and WWII is clear, yet its faded colonial charm from the Tempo Doeloe era needs urgent government backing; if guests keep avoiding it, its economic and cultural relevance in Bali will erode. The breakfast and warung menus are adequate but noticeably outdated, and the warung staff and kitchen show long‑standing complacency, although upper management is eager to make changes.

This colonial relic offers a distinct atmosphere and is a solid pick for staying in Denpasar; the garden café is a nice spot for breakfast or dinner, with friendly staff and decent food. Nearby, there are several good eateries and cafés, and the hotel sits close to Puputan Square and the museum (currently closed). However, the property feels fairly run‑down and could use some investment, and my bathroom seemed untouched since the Dutch period.

The exterior was good. The bathroom was lacking, and the breakfast was not up to par.

The hotel is truly a refuge, traditionally furnished, and my room even had a balcony; it has a pool and a lovely open seating area, which made me feel comfortable. Walking to the city center is a bit far, so I always took a motorcycle taxi.
