Located at 1,600 metres above sea level in Sporz, Lenzerheide/Valbella region, Maiensässhotel Guarda Val comprises 11 historic buildings, some dating back 300 years. The gourmet restaurant boasts 16 Gault Millau points. Rooms feature traditional wooden furnishings, satellite TV, and modern bathrooms. The Guarda Sana spa includes a log cabin sauna and relaxation pool in an ancient hay barn. Traditional Grisons cuisine is served in the Crap Naros restaurant.

The view is very nice, a retro alpine vibe, and the breakfast is superb. Unfortunately it isn’t a true alpine idyll; a busy street runs through the property. The water in the hot tubs should be changed more often. Both the rooms and the other buildings (restaurants) lack fly screens or suitable measures to keep flies out, which led to a real flood of flies. Eating under those conditions was extremely unpleasant and unappetizing.

Great concept, from the reception to the breakfast buffet is simply unique, with very courteous staff!

The architecture and vibe were great, but it felt more like a dog shelter with screaming kids around. The food at Crap Naros was mediocre, the boiled meat was dry, and the portions were cramped and low quality. The bike parking with a charging station was cheap and not up to hotel standards. The restaurant Guarda Val 16 GaultMillau was excellent. The concept doesn’t quite match the high price point; there’s much better value elsewhere.
