The property was clean, breakfast was good—usually banana/pineapple pancakes or omelette—and the staff were really friendly and helpful, sorting out guides for various places I wanted to visit and onward travel without being pushy—just helpful. The property sits up a hill and is approached by two roads; one is unpaved and often grab drivers insist on taking it before realizing it’s very difficult. The other road is fine, but you still need to convince the drivers. Because of its offset position it’s best to get motorbike taxis, so you can’t just walk quickly to a cafe or shop; however, on the other hand Rantepao is really busy and full of traffic noise, so it’s nice to be tucked away in a more scenic part.

“Amazing Place to Stay?”

The hotel was super clean and comfortable with great hot water. The bar offered ice‑cold beer and good food, but the service was the highlight: Hendrik picked me up at the bus station and helped me get to a fantastic Toraja funeral ceremony, and if you’re lucky he might BBQ pork for dinner!

“Avoid if possible 😭”

The room was clean and comfortable, although it wasn’t the one we booked. We had a very bad experience with the staff/owner: we asked about a tour, he quoted an outrageously high price for four days, so we requested only to attend a funeral instead of any of the pricey activities. We agreed on €120 to attend a funeral on Saturday and Sunday. We attended the first day’s event (2 hours) with a guide who spoke minimal English. When we returned, the owner demanded €150 for that day. We reminded him of the agreed price of €120 for two days and told him we were only happy to pay €60 (even though funerals are free to attend and no gifts were given). The owner got dramatic, sighed, argued, and began inventing random costs that had to be met. In the end we stayed only one night (out of four) and checked out first thing the next morning. After giving him the €60 he didn’t even make eye contact and just dismissed us. We also met another guest who mentioned they were cutting their stay short at that guesthouse. The room we were given had zero privacy, with the window opening onto the stairway where other guests walk. My partner left his jacket in the owner’s car; when we asked if we could get it, the owner said his car was being cleaned but no jacket was inside. He then claimed he had seen my partner wearing it but later changed his story and said he must have left it on the bus. All of this was sketchy, and honestly we felt completely ripped off, which ruined our trip to Toraja.
