“SHOCKING, HUMILIATING AND DEHUMANISING TREATMENT FROM STAFF — COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE”
Out of respect for myself and the way I was treated, there is honestly nothing I can say that I liked about this property. I experienced extreme and deeply upsetting treatment that I consider completely unacceptable. The owner took no accountability for what happened and never apologised to me. I was left feeling deeply humiliated, unwelcome and unsupported. Please see the section below for the full details of what happened. During my stay, I also experienced behaviour that made me feel deliberately targeted and bullied. On occasions when I was inside a bathroom cubicle, the lights were switched off even though staff had seen me enter. To reach the cubicle, I had to walk past the sink area, so they were aware that I was inside. This happened in a way that felt deliberate and extremely distressing. I was also asked whether I was drunk despite the fact that I do not drink alcohol. I felt that I was repeatedly being mocked, challenged and treated as though there was something wrong with me. Combined with the comments made about my sanity and mental health, this was absolutely horrific and left me feeling extremely uncomfortable and humiliated. No one should be treated this way. I arrived at Lua Hostel after spending a week at another hostel that’s advertised itself as “work” and “relax” space …where I had repeatedly been kept awake by noise outside my room from the kitchen/ common room, sometimes from around 11pm until 4am. I had made a polite complaint because I was simply trying to sleep, work and have the advertised quiet hours respected. I arrived here hoping for a fresh start and somewhere quieter. Instead, I was met with an extraordinary level of hostility from a volunteer staff member. He told me that the previous hostel had apparently given them “warnings” about me. He called me “crazy”, said he thought I was “bipolar or something”, and told me: “Whatever is wrong with you, we don’t want you here.” He then said: “Brexit, you should exit, we don’t want you here.” I am from the UK and found this deeply hostile and offensive. I am also a member of the LGBTQ+ community and identify as non-binary. At the time I was presenting in a feminine way, including wearing a feminine sun hat and shawl. I cannot know exactly what motivated his behaviour, but the combination of comments about my nationality, mental health and identity made me feel extremely singled out, judged and unwelcome. He also told me, “The police are on the way”, despite the fact that I had not threatened anyone, behaved violently or caused a disturbance. He also suggested that I could go to a hotel and “work for them” in exchange for a free stay, which I found humiliating and completely inappropriate. I have a clear audio recording of this interaction in its original form, as well as messages and screenshots relating to my reservation. I have not published the recording publicly but can provide it directly to Booking if requested. It was absolutely awful and extremely upsetting. No one should ever be treated this way by anyone let alone a staff member somewhere where they have a reservation. The owner eventually arrived and checked me. But did not apologise
